More Than a Decade in Research Consultancy: My Journey with Kenya Research Consultancy

My journey in research consultancy began more than ten years ago. What started as helping researchers navigate academic challenges has gradually developed into years of experience supporting students, academics and professionals across different disciplines, universities and countries.

During this period, I have worked on research proposals, master’s dissertations, doctoral theses, journal manuscripts, systematic and scoping reviews, quantitative and qualitative studies, data analysis, academic editing and publication support. Every assignment has been different, and that diversity has been one of my greatest sources of professional growth.

Learning Through Different Research Problems

Research consultancy requires much more than good writing. A consultant must understand the relationship between the research problem, objectives, literature, methodology, data and conclusions.

Over the years, I have encountered projects at almost every stage of the research process. Some researchers need help refining an initial idea. Others have already collected data but are struggling with analysis. Some approach us after receiving extensive supervisor corrections, while others need support preparing a manuscript for journal submission or responding to reviewers.

Working on these different challenges has strengthened my ability to identify weaknesses quickly while preserving the researcher’s original purpose and contribution.

Working with Clients Across Continents

Technology has transformed my client base. I have been privileged to support researchers in Kenya and other African countries while also working with clients based in North America, Europe and Asia.

This experience has taught me that academic expectations are not universal. Universities have different dissertation structures, ethical requirements, referencing styles and expectations regarding methodology. Effective consultancy therefore begins with understanding the client’s institution, programme and specific requirements rather than applying the same template to every project.

It has also reinforced the importance of reliability. Clients often entrust us with research representing several years of work. Confidentiality, clear communication, attention to detail and meeting agreed deadlines are therefore central to how I approach every assignment.

Adapting to COVID-19 and the AI Revolution

COVID-19 significantly changed research and consultancy. Physical meetings, fieldwork and university activities were disrupted, forcing much of the research process online. Rather than allowing this to limit the consultancy, I adapted to virtual communication, digital collaboration and remote research support. In time, these changes made it possible to serve clients across much wider geographical boundaries.

The arrival of generative artificial intelligence brought another major transformation.

I chose to learn how to use AI rather than compete against it. Today, AI can accelerate several research tasks, but experience has taught me that it must remain under human supervision. It can produce incorrect information, weak analysis and even nonexistent references when used carelessly.

The real advantage lies in combining new technology with research experience, methodological knowledge and critical judgement.

What the Journey Has Taught Me

More than ten years in this field has included successful projects, difficult assignments, demanding deadlines, extensive revisions and periods of rapid technological change. Each has contributed to how Kenya Research Consultancy & Writing operates today.

One principle has remained constant: the quality of the final research matters more than simply completing the assignment.

Our role is to help researchers produce work they understand, can defend and can confidently present to supervisors, examiners and journal reviewers.

After more than a decade, research continues to evolve, and so do we. New technologies will emerge and academic expectations will continue changing. The commitment, however, remains the same: credible research, professional service and continuous learning.
